Chess problems consist of a board position and a task. Most ask for a line of play that mates black in a set amount of moves, or a combination that results in a winning position. Many other types exist, including, but not limited to, construction tasks for various positions and proof games that have numerous goals, selfmates, helpmates, and retrograde analysis. Tournaments and championships exist for composing of original problems and for speed-solving.

Is the "Pawn Box" possible in standard chess?

This is really not difficult. Brian gave you one example, but you could imagine many more. It is quite obvious that in order to achieve the "box" as given, white needs to capture 10 black pieces. O …

Can you mate with each of your 16 pieces on its original square?

Obviously the last white move was 16. Nf3g1+. I note that black needs at least 15 moves to place the pieces as they are: 4 moves to swap queen with rook as they are (various movements possible), 2 …

Why underpromote in this KNNP-KR endgame?

If you promote to a queen with 1. b8Q, black has: 1...Re2+ 2. Kd1 Rb2 attacking the queen and hinting at mate with Rb1++. If white takes the rook 3. Qxb2 it is stalemate. Because of the mate …

What was Black's last move?

There is only one black piece left, so the last move was with the king. Black's last move was obviously Kg1-h2. The king could not have come from h3, because there is no way the white pawn could have …
