Chess problems consist of a board position and a task. Most ask for a line of play that mates black in a set amount of moves, or a combination that results in a winning position. Many other types exist, including, but not limited to, construction tasks for various positions and proof games that have numerous goals, selfmates, helpmates, and retrograde analysis. Tournaments and championships exist for composing of original problems and for speed-solving.

Easy mate in three

Herb's solution works perfectly, but since you indicated in a comment that you were expecting for another one, maybe that's it. [fen "7k/4Kp2/P4Np1/6R1/8/R6P/8/8 w - - 1 0"] 1. Rag3 Kg7 2. Rh5 g5 3. …

Play a chess game so that at the end you can start a game of checkers

Here is a proposition in 29 plies. [FEN ""] [startply "29"] 1. Nc3 b6 2. e3 Bb7 3. Ne4 h5 4. g3 Bxe4 5. Bd3 h4 6. Bxe4 hxg3 7. Bxa8 gxh2 8. a3 Nf6 9. c3 Nd5 10. Bxd5 f6 11. Bf7+ Kxf7 12. Qf3 d6 13. Q …

Where does the black king stand in this specific position?

The black king must be on c8. The white king reached g8 through g6 and h7 before the white pawns arrived on g6-h7. A white knight took the Bc8 from b6; the black queen was also taken by a knight. The …

Can we say for sure that Black's king has not moved?

The convention in chess studies and problems is that: Castles are always allowed but if retrograde analysis can prove otherwise, i.e. that rook or king have already moved. …

What move requires the greatest number of moves before it could be played in a game?

Ra1-h1 This is a similar idea to Rosie's, but using a rook instead of queen makes it longer for the far away side to achieve this move. I believe it takes 15 plies (edit: actually 13 plies, see commen …

Shortest game to "elegant" mate

I think this achieves the task in 15 plies (mate after White's 8th move): [FEN ""] 1. b4 d6 2. a4 Bf5 3. Nf3 Bd3 4. Ba3 Kd7 5. Nc3 Kc6 6. Nd5 Kxd5 7. e4+ Kc4 8. cxd3# The 9 white units necessary for …

Legal positions with one color to move only?

You found most of the possibilities where an argument about parity can determine which side has the move (however, this is not all the 32-pieces positions, see the edit at the bottom), which all have …

Move forcing opponent to checkmate in response

Yes it exists, and there are even many problems created where one side aims at forcing the other one to mate - they are called selfmates problems. …

Longest sequence of unique series moves

My current best try is 33 moves. (a previous attempt in 34 moves has been demolished by my friend Yosha Iglesias) The most promising idea I have found is to promote a pawn into a bishop and bring it b …

Endgame analysis : white to play and..?

First thoughts: We are obviously looking for a win for White. Making a draw is no challenge, you just have to exchange either the rook or your bishop even if you lose all three pawns in the process. …

Another mobility puzzle

An improvement for n=4, building on Rewan Demontay's answer: [Title "n=4, 26 pieces"] [FEN "2Rnr3/PP1PP1PP/RKQ3rk/7B/5n2/6Bb/pp1pp1p1/3NN2q w - - 0 1"] The trick is to replace some pawns by knights …

An Interesting Idea: Pinned Pieces Stalemate

[FEN "b3r3/1R1p1p1q/1p1P1P1b/1Pk1BR2/1rN1K1Nq/p7/P1P1B1P1/1qn1q1nq w - - 0 1"] Here is an (ugly) suggestion wth 29 units. White is stalemated with 8 pins; removing any Black unit would break the s …

Longest sequence of moves where White's number of available moves does not change

Hundreds of moves... We can shuffle pieces for very long, the main constraint being not to play twice the same move (per OP's definition). Here is an example line with 25 moves, that can easily be pro …

What is the highest number of pieces from one side that can be involved in a checkmate?

Here is a solution with all 16 white pieces, all mandatory for checkmate, without promoted units and without needing to protect the white king from checks. If you remove any white piece but the king, …
