When playing against the computer at chess.com, is there a way to save a game in the middle and then return to it after I'm checkmated to try again with a different strategy?

  • @Awalrod That method requires setting up the board in the intermediate position. I wanna save the game and then restore it to that state, like any other computer game. Commented Nov 4 at 23:32

I guess You mean against a computer. Not on chess.com, but (Wrong. See Awalrods comment for how to do it on chess.com) on Lichess You can play a game against the computer from any position.

To do this, on the start page:

  • Click the button "Play with the computer"
  • In the "Variant" drop-down select "from position"
  • Set up the position or paste a FEN
  • Choose other settings like strength, time control, color.

Alternatively, you can also get this dialog by setting up the position in the board editor and then click on "continue from here".

Voilà. The games are unrated.

To get the FEN of a position, select the "share & export" tab below the board in analysis mode.

  1. "Copy PGN" is in the options available to you during a computer game. Copy the PGN of the position you would like to save and paste it into a note or text it to yourself.
  2. Under the Learn/Analysis feature should be an option to paste PGN. Paste your pgn into analysis
  3. Select "Finish against computer" and play your saved game
