Whether or not the Scotch is better than the Ruy Lopez is irrelevant. But on that: right up to the super-grandmaster level, players look for alternatives to the Ruy Lopez, and the Scotch is one that has seen plenty of play. Famously Kasparov used it quite frequently, including in World Championship matches. If it's good enough to be effective at that level, it's good enough at the level of the OP too, and it's worth thinking how to respond to it. Not important that SF gives one +0.4 and the other +0.1. | |
