Anatoly Karpov (born 1951) was the World Champion from 1975 to 1985 (and FIDE World Champion from 1993 to 1999 when Garry Kasparov broke from FIDE). He's known for his solid positional play. Like Botvinnik or Capablanca, in his prime Karpov was almost impossible to defeat.
