In a casual game I played, my opponent castled around the 80th move. I want to know what was the latest move in which a player has castled, in an official game. I don’t think that there is an entry for this on Krabbe’s record site.

This web page claims that "[the] latest castling was performed on move 48 in two games: Neshewat – Garrison, Detroit 1994 and Somogyi – Black, New York 2002."

According to https://www.chessgames.com, the first was Michigan Class A (1994), Detroit, MI USA, rd 2, Jan-15. That site gives that second game here with no tournament or match citation. These are actually both on Tim Krabbe's record page under the title "Latest castling" in the "Moves" section.

  • Those were some crazy games! I wonder how castling could possibly be delayed until move 80! – David Sep 28 '20 at 10:02
  • I went to chessgames.com to read their kibitzers' comments on Neshewat-Garrison and to play through it. I can see how come Black didn't touch their king or king's rook for ages. They launched an attack with minor pieces (after sacrificing the exchange with the queen's rook) but it eventually fizzled out after many moves. But a couple of commenters said that 48 ... 0-0 was premature! – Rosie F Sep 28 '20 at 10:41
