  • Nice. A queen-rook combo-it always a combo of course. But how does that link provide proof for a theoretical 16.5 moves? I’m only reading jumbo jumbo. Does the graph have anything to do with showing proof? – Rewan Demontay Mar 1 at 1:55
  • @RewanDemontay François Labelle has run computer searches to determine the shortest games ending in just two kings. He found 2 positions with 3 non-captures and 33 total plies (one ply = one move by one side = one halfmove). See the table. So that's a game in 16.5 moves with 30 captures. The final position can be wKf2+bKe7 or wKf2+bKf7. – Remellion Mar 1 at 1:58
  • The half-move to kill would be after the opening. It takes 2, non-capture half-moves to get into play always. Checks are fine if with a capture The half-move that needs be killed is in the maneuvering process. It will always take 15 moves (1 move) to do all off the captures, 2 non-capture half-moves in the opening, and 1 non-capture half-move in the piece movements (Why I don’t know-maybe tell me why?)=16.5. Yet I only count 1/2 non-opening non-capture moves in the game-6. Qe5?! There should be 2 as the game is 17, not 16.5. What am I missing? (The opening non-captures are 1. c4 & 3.   • I gave a game in 17.0, so noncaptures are 1.c4, 1...d5, 3.Qc2 and 6...Qe5. If you try to find a game in 16.5 (you should try) it might be a different strategy again. You will always need at least one noncapturing halfmove after the first 2 halfmoves, otherwise you can't get past 4 halfmoves. – Remellion Mar 1 at 4:04
  • Ah right. I forget about 1 d5 haha. So it seems to me that one must do 2 non-capture half-moves, and then make 15 consecutive captures, with no non-capture checks, along with only half-move for maneuvering (I assume to make up for the white or black queen needing to be able to get into play. All this and only 2 possible positions to get to. Very hard. Perhaps you could add pictures in your answer of those two positions mentioned on the webpage please? – Rewan Demontay Mar 1 at 4:17

No, that is not the quickest way.

The problem is that you have too many checks. The solution I came up with is to switch to using the rooks to eat pieces. This allows the board to be cleared in 18 moves:

  • I knew the checks were a problem; I just wasn’t quite sure on how to take care of it. Seems like I missed a something. I do see, however, that the opening I used is in your game as well. Perhaps it is a generel opening for these kinds of problems? – Rewan Demontay Feb 28 at 23:43

  • Edited it since I had black doing nothing for half a move for no good reason - now it ends on the first half of move 18 instead of the second half. Now there's only 5 half moves where nothing is captured - 3 in the opening, and 2 due to checks. – D M Mar 1 at 0:28

I found the solution to the 16.5 massacre proof game that Remellion mentioned that Francois Labelle had found using a computer search! Here is that link again for convience.

Well to be more accurate, I found a computer program that found the solution. But it is amazing nonetheless!

I discovered the Jacobi Fairy Chess Helphame solver made by Francois Labelle himself. Here is the code that you can use yourself to find all 25 possible games that end on this position: stipulation dia16.5 forsyth 8/5k2/8/8/8/8/5K2/8.

It took my phone about 15 minutes to do it, so I would recommend using a computer.
