The recently concluded Game 7 of the 2014 Carlsen-Anand match went to move 122 before a draw was reached due to insufficient material. Is this the longest game played in a World Chess Championship match? If it is, what was the previous record holder? If it isn't, what games have gone longer?

Clarification: By World Chess Championship I mean anything played for the FIDE or PCA titles, or the undisputed title if pre-FIDE.

    Just as a sanity check: the players drag it out, but isn't the game a dead draw once the h-pawns come off the board? Certainly as of move 79 I can't see why anyone would play it out from either side; White's fortress is completely invulnerable and with his bishop being of the wrong color it's hard to believe that he has winning chances.

    Yes it is draw, but a bit tricky. White's plan is to stalemate black king, to force the b-pawn to advance (and convert white's a-pawn in a b-pawn, winning easy. Not difficult defense (similar as Carlsen dragging Anand to a R+N vs R itself).

The longest World Chess Championship game is now Carlsen-Nepomniachtchi (Dubai, 2021), held on 3 December 2021.

In their 6th game, Magnus Carlsen continued to press in a theoretically drawn endgame forcing Ian Nepomniachtchi to continue defending. The game went to move 136.
