In the second link from Wes' answer, the joint work of Yakov Konoval and Marc Bourzutschky is mentioned in passing, though not described at all, so I thought I'd give them a shout out here, as they have done a lot of work in particular 7-man endgames. This includes impressive work on pawnless endings, such as showing that in this position, where it is Black to move, White wins in 330 moves with best play:

I'm sure that appears complicated enough, but to really get a sense as to how complicated the optimal play is from the initial position, note that every move annotated with ! above is an only-winning move, i.e. any other move would allow a draw against best play from Black.
They later showed that this position - again with Black to move and with ! indicating an only-winning move - is a win for White in 517 moves:

Note: "win for white in X moves" here means that, assuming perfect play, it will take X moves for white to reduce the position to a won 6 piece endgame (for which there are complete tablebases available). It doesn't mean it's X moves until mate. So in the longer example here, for instance, no capture is made until exactly move 517, when a winning 6 piece endgame is reached.
In a post from 2006, Bourzutschky himself gives an account of some of their work involving 7-man
endings with pawns.
